Picturebook Linux

Welcome to the latest incarnation of my mega Picturebook Linux HOWTO, which covers the installation and configuration of Slackware Linux 8.0 onto this laptop. Unlike most traditional HOWTOs this one is extremely detailed, includes help with all the hardware subsystems on this machine, and even has custom boot, root and kernel floppies that support the USB floppy disk as an installation boot/root source, so saving you from the extra expense of that overpriced Sony PCMCIA CDROM drive.

This main page is not really part of the actual HOWTO, its intention is to give you a overview of this machine. Included is information on the various subsystems, under the hood things like, disk, CPU, video, etc, together with Linux support and finally what can be done to upgrade from the base hardware configuration, above and beyond what Sony offers.

Way back in the beginning of time when I wrote these pages, they where intended to support my C1Vx only, but since then I have had feedback from users of other Picturebook models, all with the good news that my HOWTO also works on other Picturebooks. So now these pages are updated to show this, all references to C1Vx are replaced with C1Vx where applicable.

As I mentioned earlier you will find that this document is much more detailed that the usual laptop install HOWTOs. This is due to the installation of Linux on these things being not easy (understatement of the year!!), given that the ATI powered display (the LCD) is not supported correctly by anything other then X4.0.2 or later, I detail the use of X4.1 in the X pages. Now I have broken up this mega HOWTO into many smaller parts to make it easier to read, I cover all the hardware on the C1Vx and also things like building and patching the 2.4.17 Kernel as needed. So enough of my rants, onward and up-wards!.
