Photo of the Month

Things around here have all of a sudden become busy, hence the total lack of much in the way of site updates. Anyway today I finally found some time for a minor update.

Check out the new "Photo of the month", this addition is all down to my latest acquisition, a digital SLR, which combined with living so close to sydney harbour, means lots of photo fodder.

As for the digital SLR, I ended up with a Nikon D200, which should not be a surprise to anyone who has read my camera page, just check out the existing glass...

Expect more on the D200 in the next few months, so until then enjoy the photos. One last thing, if space and bandwidth allows, I may add a link to full size copies of these photos.

Quad G5 vs SCSI Posted: February 25, 2007

Ok this one is driving me nuts, here I have one of apples last G5 based powermac, at a little over a year old its still a perfectly good machine, the problems started when the need came up to hook up a SCSI scanner to this thing.

One of the more annoying apple mistakes was the removal of SCSI from just about everything they make. Now while this may not sound like a real disaster, to those of us who own older technology scanners, it’s counts as bad, real bad.

Yes these things may be old but they are solid, fully functional and do all I need, so what’s the point in upgrading. The solution, drop a SCSI card into the powermac, after all its got PCIx slots, so why not use one of them. How hard could it be to find a card, just wander down to the nearest apple store?

OMG, how wrong can one get, so far I have tried just about every supplier here including the apple stores, and hammered the internet trying to find a card, that was basic, did not cost more then the machine and scanners combined, that someone could actually sell me. [read more]

The mouse that whimpered Posted: December 12, 2006

What little is left of my sanity has been put under some real strain, and the cause of this annoyance is all down to Apple's badly named "mighty mouse"

In 11 months, this thing has needed to be replaced twice, and for the same reason. The trackball decided to refuse to work in one direction. And yes I am well aware of the cause; it's just like the pre-optical mouse tracking days, dirt vs mechanics, dirt wins. [read more]
